Effie Marten is an historical novel set in England in 1844, which tells the story of a young woman who is sent to a private insane asylum in the wake of her brother’s suicide and her own awakening sexuality. While there, Effie experiences harsh treatment and witnesses the murder of one of the patients, motivating her to flee with a fellow inmate and embark on the journey home.
Effie Marten edition by Suzanne Shumway Literature Fiction eBooks
Suzanne Shumway places words on the page as carefully and deliberately as the best of the impressionists placed color on canvas. The consequences are both a sensual delight at times and full of pain at others . Early on the reader might, as I certainly did, become very conscious of cummulative syntax and find almost as much pleasure in sentence structure as in content, but then, as I certainly did, get swept away by the storyline into an intimate image of the almost universal tragedy that befell young women of the Victorian age.I loved it and have shared it with many of the "stronger for the struggle" women in my family.

Effie Marten edition by Suzanne Shumway Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Historical fiction set in the mid 19th century dramatically shows the plight of women from that era in England. The author keeps you captivated with plot twists and engrossed with occasional editorial comments that shows her knowledge of and sensitivity to the lack of control that women had.
This storey gives a glimpse of life in the middle ages and how knowledfe has brought us so far. The author does a superb job in creating a character we can empathize and come to cherish. I hope she continues to write about Effie and Polly and their lives as wives and mothers in such a different time than ours. I want more!
Unexpected twists and turns, yet highly satisfying. This first-time author clearly seemed to know the time and place of which she wrote. Highly recommended.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It is well written and keeps your attention to the very end. Not only is the plot engaging, Suzanne's knowledge of the times provides a window into the dearth of opportunities for - and vulnerabilities of - women of the Victorian era. Historical fiction at its best - entertaining and educational!
I really enjoyed this book. I liked how it went into the real life struggles of women in that era.
The author captures the manners and the atmosphere of Victorian England, utilizing a number of devices to tell her story initial "snapshots" through which we learn how our heroine matures from child to young woman, lively first-person narration, and correspondence. I admire the wit by which the tale is told and the authentic way the characters converse with one another. This is a tale with a strong social conscience, but the message is delivered with nuance and sophistication.
As someone with limited knowledge of and interest in Victorian England, I approached the task of reading this novel as I would a trip to the dentist. I was amazed at the extent to which the book took over my life for the three days it took me to read it. Professor Shumway obviously has an intimate knowledge of the practices and culture of 19th century England, but she is able to share this knowledge with the reader with such ease and grace that I forgot that I was reading about a far distant place and time. The book is suspenseful and captivating despite its detailed characterization-Grisham has nothing on Shumway-and it sheds light on a topic that remains relevant today. I hope the novel is a commercial success, and I look forward to seeing more from Shumway.
